Stop Negative Talk
One of the worst habits you can engage in is talking badly about yourself
Yet it’s a very common problem for both teenagers and adults.
Learning how to stop this habit now will help you throughout your life. Negative self-talk is simply saying bad things about yourself. For example, if you make a mistake you might say, “I’m such an idiot.”
You may also say things like:
· I’m so ugly and fat
· I can’t do anything right
· No one will ever like me
· I’m worthless
· I hate myself
When you say these things to yourself it can cause your self-esteem to plummet. Negative thoughts lead to negative actions. You’ll be more likely to feel bad about who you are, take risks that aren’t healthy, and get in the way of your own success.
Spend some time paying attention to the way you talk about yourself and try to intervene. When you catch yourself saying something like, “I hate myself because of what I did,” change it around.
Instead, say, “I made a mistake, but that doesn’t mean I’m a mistake or a bad person. I need to learn from this so I can make a better choice next time.” Talking to yourself the way you would a good friend can help you have fewer problems related to stress.
